Buoyancy: the skill that changes every dive

DEVELOP YOUR DIVING

Small improvements in control can change how a whole dive feels.

What is buoyancy?

Buoyancy describes your tendency to float, sink or remain at a particular depth. For divers, managing it is central to controlling position in the water.

Good control helps you stay with a buddy, maintain your planned depth and avoid unintended contact with the bottom or other surroundings.

And what is trim?

Trim is your orientation in the water. A balanced position suited to the dive can help you move efficiently and keep your fins clear of the bottom.

Buoyancy and trim work together. A diver may be staying at the same depth while still having to work hard to maintain position because their equipment balance needs attention.

Why it matters

  • Comfort: less unnecessary movement can make diving feel more relaxed.
  • Awareness: better control leaves more attention available for your buddy and surroundings.
  • Visibility: keeping fins away from sediment helps avoid stirring it up.
  • Environmental care: remaining clear of the bottom reduces accidental contact with habitats.

Practise with a purpose

Ask an instructor to help assess your weighting, equipment arrangement and technique. Suitable practice can include holding position, making controlled changes in depth and moving without touching the bottom.

Make changes with guidance rather than guessing, particularly when using unfamiliar equipment. Breathe continuously and never hold your breath to control buoyancy.

Improvement comes through practice, not through rushing to achieve a perfect position.

Make your next dive a learning opportunity

Talk to a club instructor about suitable ways to practise and get feedback on your buoyancy and trim.
