Scuba diving with a disability: exploring your options with Staffordshire Divers

START WITH A CONVERSATION

Interested in diving, but unsure what support you might need? Talk to Staffordshire Divers.

If you have a disability or additional support needs, you may have questions about trying scuba diving. How would you get into the pool? Could equipment or teaching approaches be adapted? What would you need to arrange before attending?

These are useful questions to ask before making a booking. Staffordshire Divers has a Diving for All instructor, providing a starting point for discussing individual needs and exploring suitable options.

Individual needs deserve an individual conversation

A diagnosis or description of a disability does not tell us everything about a person's abilities, experience or interests. The most useful starting point is a conversation about what you would like to do and what support you may need.

You might be curious about a first pool experience, interested in learning to dive or already qualified and considering a return to the water. Each situation involves different questions.

We can discuss your enquiry with the appropriate instructor and explain what needs checking before any activity is agreed. Participation depends on individual suitability, the available facilities, support arrangements and any required medical assessment.

What can a Diving for All instructor help you explore?

Having an instructor with Diving for All training means there is someone at the club with relevant training to help discuss possible approaches to participation.

The conversation may cover how instructions are communicated, how equipment is handled, what assistance might be needed and whether particular arrangements can be provided.

We will need to confirm what is practical for the person, venue and proposed activity. We do not assume that every adaptation or item of specialist equipment is available, and we will explain any limitations before you commit.

Questions about access and facilities

Getting to the pool and moving around the venue can be as important as the underwater activity itself. Please discuss access requirements before booking so that relevant arrangements can be checked.

  • Parking, drop-off points and the route into the building.
  • Steps, doors and access to the poolside.
  • Changing facilities, toilets and space for assistance.
  • Suitable arrangements for entering and leaving the water.
  • Whether a companion or support person needs to attend.
  • Any equipment, communication or handling requirements.

Our Wednesday social meeting venue and the pool used for training are separate locations. Please tell us which activity you are interested in so we can discuss the relevant venue.

Do not assume that a particular access facility, pool hoist or specialist arrangement is available until it has been confirmed.

Medical suitability is a separate consideration

Practical access arrangements and medical suitability are different questions. A person may be able to access a venue but still need medical advice before diving, or may need access support without that determining their medical suitability.

The appropriate diving medical screening process must be completed. Depending on the information provided, advice or clearance from a suitably qualified medical professional may be required.

Our instructors can explain the process and participation arrangements, but cannot replace the required medical assessment. Please resolve screening requirements before attending a booked session.

You can ask questions before deciding

An initial enquiry does not commit you to a course. It gives you an opportunity to understand what may be possible and what information or preparation is needed.

Questions you might want to ask include:

  • Who would discuss my support needs with me?
  • What does the proposed session involve?
  • Which arrangements can the club and venue provide?
  • What would I need to bring or arrange myself?
  • What happens if I feel uncomfortable or want to stop?
  • What costs apply, and when would a booking be confirmed?

If an activity is unsuitable or an arrangement cannot be provided, that needs to be explained openly. There is no expectation to proceed with something you are not comfortable with.

Already qualified and considering a return?

If your circumstances have changed since you last dived, tell us about your previous training, recent experience and what you would like to do next.

Existing qualifications help explain your background, but they do not remove the need to review current suitability and support requirements. Any refresher, familiarisation or further training should reflect the individual situation.

Read our Returning to Diving information and contact us to discuss an appropriate next step.

How to start the conversation

  1. Tell us your goal. Explain whether you want to try diving, learn or return with an existing qualification.
  2. Outline access or support requirements. A brief initial explanation helps us arrange the right conversation.
  3. Discuss the options. We can review facilities, possible support and any outstanding questions.
  4. Confirm arrangements before booking. Suitability, required screening, support and costs should be clear before you commit.

Please avoid sending detailed medical information through a general website enquiry. We can explain the appropriate process for discussing relevant information privately.
