UK diving: there is more beneath the surface than you think
EXPLORE CLOSER TO HOME
You do not need an overseas flight to find an underwater adventure.
A surprising amount of variety
UK diving covers a wide range of experiences. Freshwater sites, coastal reefs, rocky shorelines and wrecks each offer something different.
Conditions vary considerably between sites and days. Choosing a suitable location and plan is part of the experience, with training, weather, water movement and visibility all influencing the decision.
Freshwater diving
Inland sites provide opportunities for training, practising skills and enjoying dives without a coastal journey. Some contain submerged structures or attractions that give divers features to explore.
They can also be useful places to become familiar with equipment and build experience on dives appropriate to your qualification.
Coastal sites and wrecks
At the coast, different habitats and underwater features create another range of possibilities. Rocky reefs can reward a slow look, while wrecks offer a connection with maritime history.
Coastal diving brings additional planning considerations, including tides, currents, access and boat arrangements. Wreck penetration requires specialist training and planning; enjoying a wreck from outside is a different activity from entering it.
Give yourself time to look
UK marine life can be easy to miss when you hurry. Depending on the site and conditions, careful observation may reveal fish, crabs, anemones and other life tucked into the landscape.
There is no guarantee of a particular sighting. The interest often lies in noticing the details that make each dive different.
