Qualified on holiday? Getting started with UK diving

YOUR NEXT DIVING CHAPTER

Your holiday qualification can be the beginning of a much longer diving story.

Perhaps you learned to dive on a warm-water holiday and enjoyed it enough to keep going at home. The next question is often how to find buddies, become familiar with UK conditions and choose an appropriate first local dive.

Start by discussing your qualification, training environment and recent experience with a suitable club or instructor. A qualification is useful evidence of training, but preparation also depends on the conditions and equipment you will encounter next.

What might feel different in UK water?

Conditions vary between sites and seasons. You may encounter colder water, different visibility, extra exposure protection and equipment that feels less familiar than the kit used on your course.

A drysuit, additional weighting or thicker gloves can change how familiar tasks feel. Appropriate instruction and practice matter when introducing unfamiliar equipment.

UK diving also offers variety. Inland sites, coastal reefs and wreck exteriors provide different experiences, but suitability depends on the specific dive and the people taking part.

The aim is to choose an appropriate introduction, rather than assume every UK dive requires the same equipment or level of experience.

What should you tell the club?

  • Your training organisation and current qualifications.
  • When and where you completed your training.
  • How recently you dived and the conditions you experienced.
  • Whether you have used a drysuit or other relevant equipment.
  • Equipment you own and anything you need advice about.
  • Any skills you want to practise or questions you feel uncertain about.

Be open about your experience. A diver who has only completed their qualifying dives needs a different conversation from someone with extensive warm-water experience.

If you have not dived for some time, read about returning to diving after a break before arranging an open-water session.

Find people to dive with before buying everything

Joining a local diving community can help you understand the types of diving available and discuss equipment choices with people familiar with those activities.

Before purchasing a complete equipment package, ask about fit, suitability and compatibility. Equipment access and hire arrangements should be confirmed for the activity you intend to join.

Staffordshire Divers welcomes enquiries from divers trained through different recognised organisations. Tell us what you already hold and we can explain membership arrangements, relevant preparation and available training options.
